Sophie (Sue) Louise Habina Gray
Sophie Gray, age 91, died January 25, 2019, peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was a native of Dunbar, Pennsylvania, and lived in Liberty County, Georgia, since 1957. Sophie was born to John Kazimer Habina and Angela Constance Koszarek on March 20, 1927, in Dunbar, PA. She was the seventh child of fourteen siblings and was the last remaining of her immediate family. She graduated from Dunbar Township Highschool in 1945. She leaves as her legacy her son, Jim J. Gray of Hinesville, GA, and her granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Gray of Athens, GA, who were her pride and joy.
She was a founding member of St. Stephens Catholic Church and was a member of the Council of Catholic Women. She held various offices in the St Stephen Parish level, Valdosta-Brunswick Deanery level, and the Savannah Diocesan Board. She was a member of the Liturgy Committee, Past President of the Vincent de Paul Society, Past President of the Senior Citizen’s Silver Liners, and a member of the Parish adult choir. She was honored as a recipient of the Bishop Garland Award at the Feast of Christ the King at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. She was a member and Past Matron of Button Gwinnett Chapter 497, Order of the Eastern Star. She volunteered for many years as a substitute teacher at First Presbyterian Christian Academy. She retired from Civil Service as Housing Manager at Ft Stewart after 30 years. She enjoyed cooking, craft making, dancing, soprano singing, and speaking Polish with her family. She loved Jesus, the church, her family and friends, and taking care of others through volunteer service.
A Memorial Mass is scheduled for Saturday, February 2, 2019, at 1:00 pm at St. Stephen First Martyr Catholic Church in Hinesville, GA. Private Burial will be in Dunbar, PA, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to her granddaughter’s Christian Mission fund with checks payable to the UGA Wesley Foundation, 64 Good Hope Road, Colbert, GA 30628.
The family would also like to thank Dawn O’Neal Deloach for love, affection, and caregiving, and Georgia Hospice Care.
