Paul Jack Kerr (MAJ., U.S. Army, Ret.)

June 13, 1933 — December 20, 2021

In the early morning on Monday, December 20, 2021, Major Paul J. Kerr (U.S. Army, Ret.), 88, was invited to go fishing with the angels in Heaven.

Born on June 13, 1933 to P.J. and Mary Kerr of Glennville, GA, he graduated from Georgia Teacher’s College, and becoming an industrial arts teacher prior to his induction into the U.S. Army. After attending O.C.S., his distinguished career included two tours of Korea where he was in charge of building a middle school at Paju. During his two tours in Vietnam, he was awarded four Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He also served there as a district advisor, teaching English and getting to know the Vietnamese people.

After retiring from the Army, Paul (known to many as Jack) owned retail businesses, taught ballistics, produced Maggie’s Lake Blue Grass Festival in Long County, GA, finally becoming a Master Gardener. Throughout his life, Paul loved fishing. Perhaps his favorite fishing trips were those he shared with family and friends at Peregrine Fishing Lodge on Haida Gwaii, formerly Queen Charlotte’s Island in Canada.

Among those waiting for Paul in Heaven were his infant daughter, Ava; and his son, Micah.

Paul leaves behind his wife, Velma; daughter, Angel and son-in-law, C.J.; daughter-in-law, Yoko; beloved granddaughter, Akimi; special companion, Cheeno - The Wonder Dog; along with many other relatives and friends. Paul had a smile and a story for everyone. He will be greatly missed.

Paul’s family wishes to express a special thank you to the staff at Station Exchange in Richmond Hill and to the nurses of Pruitt Hospice for their love and support during this last chapter of his life.

A funeral was held on December 23, 2021 at Glennville City Cemetery in Glennville, GA with only the immediate family attending.

Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel assisted with arrangements. Online condolences can be made at www.carteroglethorpe.com.
