Martha Ann Fussell

We are honoring our beautiful, brave, strong willed and intelligent mother Martha Ann Laura (Hampton) Fussell who, on March 19, 2025, moved to her Heavenly home. Her mantra was "stick up for your kin- folk," which she extended to include friends. She was not above calling the Governor's personal phone number to right an injustice and everyone who really knew her well knew not to ask for her opinion unless you were ready for her answer, which might not always be right, but she would definitely never admit to it being wrong.

Martha Ann was born August 16th, 1932 in Rhine Georgia to Annie Lee (Boone) and Benjamin Franklin Hampton and for 92 years she demonstrated the early values her parents taught her of dedication to her faith in Jesus Christ, loyality to her family and pride for service to her country and her work. She was a die-hard Republican married to a Democratic politician. They knew in voting they were cancelling the others vote but she clung to her belief. Yet, she honored our father as a military wife seeing him through 25 years of service and two wars. Later in her life, she used the book keeping skills she gained from her father's woods riding career, to open Fussell & Son Furniture in 1967; a family business she operated with her husband Bobby Lee Fussell and son Kenny.

She loved learning and was the first in her family to finish high school. Her educational dreams reached beyond her business to include art, writing and music (where she served as the church pianist for West Side Baptist Church and children's choir accompanist at First Baptist Hinesville for many years). Another craft she excelled in was crocheting family names which hundreds of families have displayed in their homes.

Her most significant accomplishment, at least in her opinion, is her children Kenny Fussell (Jennifer), Kathy Bowen (Kim), Angie Hensley (Barry), her grandchildren Aaron Bowen (Sarah), Nicki Fogg, Jordan Bowen (Chelsey), Abbra Francis (Bobby), Matthew Fussell, Austin Hensley (Ramey), Kayla Hensley (Morgan) and great-grandchildren Emerson and Everly Bowen, Cora and Graham Fogg, Meyers Francis and Luke Hensley. She made sure the older grandchildren knew how to swim, fish, paint and become avid readers and now themselves writers. She modeled for them Christian behavior by attending church, teaching Sunday School and ministering to the nursing home for several years.

Our hearts are broken. We will miss her Ann-isms like "you can't change a leopards spots". But now she is living eternally with her precious Savior Jesus. She leaves behind her remaining family, several cousins, nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends, including her nursing home neighbor Maude who prayed to the end for momma to get up and race her down the hall in their wheel chairs like they always did.

Martha Ann's final earthly service will take place on Tuesday the 25th, 2025, at 10:00 at Hinesville Cemetery. Those wishing to pay their respects and celebrate her life with the family are welcome to attend the service or come to the visitation at Carter Funeral Home Monday the 24th from 5-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, a fund has been created in memory of Marth Ann, to the Heart Association or your local church.
