Leon Jones Peebles, a dedicated community member and respected professional, departed this life on February 20, 2025, at Liberty Regional. He was born on December 2, 1932, to the late Essie Mae Carter and Leon Smiley Peebles and his journey was marked by service, commitment, and love for both his family and his community.
Leon’s passion for education began early in life. He graduated from Treutlen High in 1949 and later continued his studies at ABAC and the University of Georgia. His career spanned over three decades with the University of Georgia extension services, where he served as a county agent and 4-H leader, impacting countless young lives through his guidance and mentorship. In addition to his work with the university, Jones also operated a landscaping business, a pursuit that reflected his affinity for the outdoors and creative artistry. He contributed to the community's well-being through his involvement with the Food Mission for several years, demonstrating his commitment to helping those in need.
Jones was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hinesville for over 63 years serving as an Elder and a Deacon.
A proud veteran, Jones served in the Army during the Korean War and in Ethiopia, experiences that shaped his character and deepened his sense of duty.
Jones was known for his vibrant spirit and relentless drive. He was always looking for something to do, filling his days with meaningful activities that showcased his love for landscaping and engagement with life.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Lucy Cammack Peebles; his daughter, Debbie Peebles; and his sister, Lynn Peebles Groover. Jones is predeceased by his parents Essie Mae and Leon S. Peebles and one daughter, Lisa Peebles.
