Joseph B. Allen, “Captain Joe”, 80, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.
Joe was known as Captain Joe or Uncle Joe by everyone from the Ogeechee River in Richmond Hill, Georgia to the Sebastian Inlet in Florida. Since the early 1960’s, he had been a commercial fisherman. Depending on the season and location, he was always crabbing or shrimping. When he wasn’t working he enjoyed golfing, fishing, mowing his lawn, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.
Joe met the love of his life, Vera, when he was 17 years old. Vera said right away, “I am going to marry that boy!” Five years later, they did marry and together they had three daughters. They were happily married for 58 years, now he has gone onto Heaven to prepare a forever home for Vera and his family. He never met a stranger and had many friends. He was a great man with a heart of gold and will surely be missed.
He is survived by his wife, Vera Dale Allen; daughters, Brenda Allen, Pat Horton (Calvin), and Betty Jo Doney (Joe); grandchildren, Chelsey (Josh), Kristen (Bradley), Emma, Brendan, Mikalah, and Joey; great-grandchildren, Ally, Noah, and Jonah; brother, James Allen (Lora); sisters, Leigh Kennedy (Hal) and Dorothy Brierton (Bryan); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services for Joe will be private.
