In Memory of Jose Santiago
August 27, 1955 – April 15, 2025“He did things his way—and he made sure you knew it.”
Jose Santiago finally got the last word on April 15, 2025, at the age of 69. Known for his stubborn streak and sharp tongue, Jose lived exactly the life he wanted—without asking for permission or forgiveness.
Born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Jose came into this world with opinions, and he never ran out. He served 2 years in the US Army, then went into the GA National Guard. He retired from the GA National Guard after 20 years of service and DPW-Civil Service after 32 years. He worked hard, complained harder, and told it like it was whether you wanted to hear it or not. Subtlety was never his strong suit, but loyalty was—and if Jose was in your corner, he was there for life (though he might not let you forget it).
He is preceded by his father, Illuminado Cabrera and survived by his mom, Herminia Cabrera, sisters Iris Cabrera and Diana Cabrera, wife Vivian Santiago, children, Jose Santiago, Carlos Santiago, Hector Santiago, Ana Brown, 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and a collection of tools he never let anyone touch. He’s also left behind plenty of “Jose-isms,” most of which we can’t print here.
Jose didn’t care much for ceremonies or sentiment, so a short and simple gathering will be held on April 26, 2025 at 1:30 at Sanford Carter Funeral Home. Come share a story and laughs, and enjoy not being interrupted—he’d want you to.
“Not everyone’s cup of tea—but definitely someone’s strong coffee.”
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society. Do something bold today. Say what you think. Take no nonsense. Or sit in your favorite chair and grumble about politics —Jose would’ve liked that.
The family will receive friends on Saturday April 26, 2025 at 1:30 at Carter Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday at 2:30 in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home.
Carter Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
