Jesse J. Powell, 82, passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2021 in Hinesville, GA. He was born on November 17, 1938 in Scranton, PA to John and Dorothy Powell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dennis Powell, and sister, Marlene Martin.
Those left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Patricia Powell; children, Chris Lee Powell and Brian Shae Powell both of Savannah, GA, Patrick Bryant of Asheville, NC, Dean Bryant of Hinesville, GA, Danny Murray of Cumming, GA; their wives; eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Jesse enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1955 at the age of 17. He was a veteran of two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star with cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, and ROV Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He was a life-long member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Hinesville Chapter 789. Jesse was a Maintenance Chief and retired February 1, 1976 as a Chief Warrant Officer-3. After his military service, he continued his career as a Department of Defense Civil Servant.
In addition, he was also active with the Boy Scouts of America, Coastal Georgia Council volunteering as a Cub Master, Scout Master, District Commissioner, and Council Commissioner along with other positions. Jesse completed advanced training in Wood Badge and served as a Wood Badge Scout Master. He attended training at the Philmont Training Center in New Mexico. He also received a Doctorate of Commissioner Service. For his work, he was awarded the Silver Beaver, the highest award a council may give to a volunteer.
Since 2005 he had been a member of and served in club positions and district offices of the Lions Club International and the Hinesville Lions Club. He was District Governor in 2010 and the recipient of several International President’s Certificates of Appreciation. He was Melvin Jones Fellow and was inducted into the District Hall of Fame.
Memorial services with Military Honors will be held in the Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, GA. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, seating at the service will be limited, the public is invited to watch the service via Livestream at www.facebook.com/cfhbchapel2.
Social distancing guidelines will be in place and masks are required to enter the funeral home.
