Ret. SFC Guy Allen Berg of Hinesville Ga, aged 72, passed away on August 28, 2024, in the arms of his loving wife, Paula Berg, of 41 years in the Badlands, South Dakota; on the road trip of his dreams. Born on May 12, 1952, in Park River, North Dakota, Guy lived a life marked by service, adventure, and strong family connections.
A distinguished veteran, Guy served in both the Navy and the Army, dedicating a total of 26 years to military service. He was a highly decorated veteran and his commitment to his country was profound and deeply respected among his peers. After retiring from the military, he transitioned to a civilian role, working for the city of Hinesville Public Works, as a mechanic and then as water/wastewater operator for 22 years, where he continued to serve his community with distinction.
Guy was a devout member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Hinesville, GA, where he was deeply involved in church activities. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and his faith was an important part of his life, providing strength and comfort through his years.
Beyond his professional and spiritual life, Guy was known for his vibrant personality. Described as a badass, fun, outgoing, and opinionated individual, he often brought joy and laughter to those around him. His hobbies included painting, traveling, watching sports, joking with friends and family, and fishing with his friends and granddaughters.
He is survived by his loving wife, Paula Berg; children, Patricia Hiner and husband (James), Cassandra Berg-Gordon and husband (David), and Greg Berg; granddaughters, Emma Gordon (12), Amelia Hiner (12) and Lorelei Gordon (10) and siblings, Mickey (and Cheryl) Berg, David (and Sara Berg), and Mary (and Herb) Hammersteadt . He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services to honor and celebrate his life will be held at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Hinesville, GA. On September 14, 2024. There will be a brief visitation from 10:00 am to 10:30 am, followed by the rosary prayer. The funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Guy's memory to Wounded Warriors, DAV (Disabled American Veterans), or St. Jude. These organizations reflect his lifelong commitment to service and his compassionate spirit.
