Eleanor Howard Gassett

Eleanor Howard Gassett passed away peacefully on Sunday October 27, 2024 at home surrounded by her loving family.

Eleanor Howard Gassett was born on June 1, 1936 to the late David Lee Howard and Emma Fulton Howard in Long County, Georgia, and entered eternal rest on October 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, whose warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love were gifts to all who knew her. Known affectionately as "Meme" and "Nana," Eleanor’s devotion to her family was the cornerstone of her life, and her gentle spirit will be forever remembered and deeply missed.

Preceding Eleanor in death is her beloved husband of 52 years, Henry Roscoe Gassett, who affectionately called her “Ellie.” Her parents, Emma Fulton and David Howard; her sisters, Williene Ray, Ethel Hardee Miness, Rosetta McLamb, and Grace Elizabeth Wells Gowens; her brothers, Richard Howard, Rowland Howard, and James Howard; her foster daughter, Valerie Dart; and her granddaughter, Candace Coursey Carter.

Eleanor is survived by her devoted children: her son, Holt Coursey (Bobbie Coursey) and daughters, Belinda Gassett Johnson (Samuel Johnson), Catina Gassett Ray (Barry Ray), Kathy Dart Hilt (Michael Hilt). She was a proud and loving grandmother to Shannon Coursey Muenzenmeyer (Brian Muenzenmeyer), Holt Coursey III. (Audra Coursey), Jamie Bradford (April Bradford), Stephanie Rushing Eldred (Morgan Eldred), John Rushing Jr., Rebecca Rushing, Skyler Bone (Mitchell Bone), Ashley Weathers (William Weathers), Madison John (Xavier John), Ashton DeLoach, and Shelby Ray. She also leaves behind many great and great-great-grandchildren.

Eleanor’s memory will be honored in a ceremony where her family will gather to celebrate her life and the joy she brought to those around her. Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who have expressed their support and shared in their sorrow during this time

Visitation will be Tuesday October 29, 2024 at Carter Funeral Home from 6 - 8 P.M.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 A.M. at Carter Funeral Home with Pastor Andrew Nelms officiating . 

Active pallbearers will be Ronald Ray, Mark Floyd, Xavier John, Gary Arnold, Henry Raiford, and Stephen Stafford.

Burial will follow in Elim Baptist Church Cemetery.
