David “Neil” Smiley, Sr., 83, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at home surrounded by his family.
He was a lifelong resident of Liberty and Bryan Counties. He was a veteran of the Georgia National Guard. He retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation and from the Bryan County Inspections Department. Neil was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed planting gardens and sharing all of the fruits and vegetables he grew with family and friends.
Neil was preceded in death by his two brothers, Joseph Carroll Smiley, Jr. and William “Billy” Smiley; and two sisters, Margaret Floyd and Betty Floyd.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Smiley; son and daughter-in-law, David and Laura Smiley; daughter and son-in-law, Dana Kay and Dave Johnson; four grandchildren, Jay Smiley (Ashley), Ryan Smiley, Allison Thomas (Dylan), and Jordan Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Elizabeth, and Walker; two brothers, Robert “Bob” Smiley and Hugh Smiley; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Gumbranch Baptist Church Cemetery. Masks are required to attend and social distancing rules will be in place.
