Peggy Goodman Fraser

April 30, 1923 — January 28, 2014

Hinesville Mrs. Peggy Goodman Fraser, 90, passed away on January 28, 2014, at Savannah's Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Peggy was born in Greenville, GA, on April 30, 1923, to Maltire and Elsie O'Neal. Peggy attended the University of Georgia and graduated from Emory University with a degree in nursing. She served as a nurse in the US Army in World War II. During that time she met Jess L. Goodman, an Army captain from Clemson, SC, and married him in 1946. As Jess continued his military career, Peggy traveled with him to many destinations stateside and overseas. During that time, she continued to serve as a school nurse and head of a county health program in Dahlonega, GA, while Jess was deployed to Korea. In 1953, they adopted their first son, Jess Lewis, Jr., and in 1954 they had their second son, Joe O'Neal. The Family continued moving with the Army until their final assignment to Fort Stewart, GA, in 1967. The family remained in Hinesville where they became very active members in Peggy's beloved First Presbyterian Church where, over her remaining years, she served as a deacon and elder. Upon Jess's death in 1978, Peggy, who had retired after 18 years as school nurse at Diamond Elementary, became an entrepreneur, opening "The Sew Express" on Memorial Drive. She eventually sold the business and married Olin Fraser, Sr., in 1985 and moved into his historic antebellum home on Court Street. She remained with him until his death in 2011. She felt extremely fortunate to have had the company of two wonderful and loving husbands through most of her adult life. She moved to Richmond Hill's Magnolia Manor in 2013 where she remained until her death. Peggy was very active in the Hinesville community with membership in the Morning Glory Garden Club, Historical Society, United Way, American Business Women's Association and Hinesville Arts Council. She generously supported The American Heart Association and led the "Heart Walk" for 2 years. She was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, and her husbands, Jess L. Goodman, Sr., and Olin Fraser, Sr. Peggy is survived by her two loving sons, Lewis (Mary) and Joe Goodman (Jenny); grandchildren, Eric, Ryann, and Sara; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Morgan; stepchildren, Olin Fraser (Marian), Claire McLean (Jimmy), Layton Fraser (Sheila), and Annette Crankshaw (Bill); grandchildren, Morgan, Dell, Meredith, Emily, Cate, Ansley, and Andrew, and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2014, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Memorial Service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church of Hinesville with Rev. Roland Banks officiating. After the service, the family will receive visitors at 208 E. Court Street. Peggy will be buried alongside her first husband, Jess, in a private ceremony at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery at a later date. Pallbearers will be Lee Morgan, Mark Morgan, Kevin George, John Wood, Ed Reilly, and Chris Vance. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Hinesville, 320 East Memorial Drive, Hinesville, GA 31313.
