Floyd Wendell Allen

Sergeant First Class (Ret) Floyd Wendell Allen passed away Friday, February 7, 2014 in Richmond Hill at the age of 84. He was born January 13, 1930 in Fairview Oklahoma to the late Jack and Ruth Allen. He was married to the late Bernell Webb on October 3, 1954, and they traveled the world with the United States Army before retiring to Lebanon, Missouri. Floyd went on to complete a second career with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources working at Bennett Spring State Park in Missouri. After Bernell passed away, Floyd moved to Richmond Hill to be close to his daughter and grandchildren. Sergeant First Class Allen, US Army, retired from the Army in January of 1973 after serving over 21 years and 8 months. His service included five overseas tours to France, Germany, Korea, and Vietnam and included service in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His bravery and dedication to serving his nation are exemplified by his several years of wartime service culminating in serving as a Helicopter Crew Chief and Door Gunner in the 1st Air Cavalry Division (Airmobile) during the Vietnam War. His many awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with a oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with "V" for valor device, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Combat Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Overseas Medal (five awards), Good Conduct Medal (4 awards), the National Defense Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the Senior Aircraft Crewman Badge. Left to celebrate Floyd's life and memory are his two daughters, Belinda Torrescano and her husband Greg Torrescano of Richmond Hill, Georgia and Polly Towey and her husband Tom Towey of Glenwood Springs, Colorodo. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Alan and Jennifer Torrescano of Savannah, GA and Jonathan and Melissa Torrescano of Port Wentworth, GA. Floyd was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. Floyd's remains will be interred at the Hinesville Cemetery alongside his wife, Bernell and their son, Randy Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, Floyd's family asks that donations by made to the USO which fulfills its mission of lifting the spirits of America's troops and their families.
