Janie Messer Lee

July 21, 1936 — February 13, 2014

Gladis Jane Messer Lee, 77, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014. She was born in Wedowee, Alabama, and graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High School in Florida. She married her high school sweetheart, Lannie L. Lee, Jr., on July 20, 1954. They were married for 57 years before he preceded her in death on November 17, 2011. In her mid to late teens, Janie enjoyed roller skating and won several competitions. She was an office manager to State Farm Insurance Agencies and this became her career for many years. In addition to her two children, Linda and Lannie, she was blessed with four grandchildren. She was always involved with them; from making crafts, to the time she got on her riding lawn mower and carved out "Papa Bear Woods" on their property in Ludowici, GA. She was very gifted and talented with her love of writing poetry throughout her life, from the birth of her children and continuing on to her grandchildren. Janie was preceded in death by her husband, Lannie L. Lee, Jr.; her parents, Ross and Bertha Messer; and three sisters, Anne Wright, Donnie Gauntt, and Ermis Cosper. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Louise Clary of Washington, IL, and one son, Lannie L. Lee, III (Debra), of Savannah, GA; four grandchildren, Steven A. Fitton, II, of Goldsboro, NC, Lannie L. Lee, IV (Lisa), of Savannah, GA, LeeAnn Grebner (Jerod) of Washington, IL, and Christopher Lee of Seattle, WA; three great-granddaughters, Emilee, Kylee, and Karlee; two sisters, Ruby Barber (Bill) of Atlanta, GA, and Marie Cosper of LaGrange, GA; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Friday at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral Service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 15, at Elim Baptist Church, with Reverend Greg Bentley officiating. Burial will follow in Elim Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steven A. Fitton, II, USAF, Lannie L. Lee, IV, Christopher W. Lee, USAF, Stephen Barber, Chip Cosper, and Jerod Grebner.
