Gum Branch Rufus E. Brady, 78, passed away Monday at home after a long illness, under the care of Heartland Hospice and with his loved ones by his side. He was born February 4, 1936, in Lecompte, Louisiana, and had lived in Hinesville since the 1950's. He joined the Georgia National Guard and retired after nearly twenty-one years of service. He retired from civil service at Ft. Stewart after twenty-one years. Mr. Brady served on the Gum Branch City Council for three years and served as Mayor for nine years. After retiring in 1989, he worked at Wal-Mart Super Center in Hinesville for nine years as a people greeter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garner and Frozine Brady; brothers, Otis, Floyd, Charlie, Arthur Lee, and a set of twins; sisters, Jewel Handley, Margareta Hayden, Margie Cook, and Georgia Noles; grandson, James Daniel Miness; step-daughter, Patricia Jimerson; step-sons, Mackie Meadows and Christopher Landers; and son-in-law, Joey Raiford. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 35 years, Georgia Brady of Hinesville, two daughters, Cindy (Roger)Maxwell of Hinesville, Karen (Jerry) Jeffers of Rhame, ND; a special gift in his life who he loved like a daughter, Shelia Raiford of Ludowici; stepdaughter, Debbie (Ricky) Brown of Gladewater, TX; sons, Robert (Carol) Brady of Ludowici and Dwayne Brady of Hinesville; twin sister, Relie Glaze of Slidell, LA; seventeen grandchildren, Jessica (Matt) Armbrister , Elizabeth "Beth", Ashley, Tanner, Allison (Mark) Breningstall, Casey, Suzie, Danny Mack, Corey, Dale Roberts, E.J., Jason (Mandy), Donald, Dale, Amanda, David and Bobby (Brandi) Brady; seventeen great-grandchildren who were his pride and joy; very dear, longtime friends, Bob and Grace Day of Adle, GA; special friends, Renae, Lori and Sandra of Hinesville, GA. Mr. Brady will be missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at A New Beginning Church in Ludowici with Pastors Tom Gardner and Grace Day officiating. Burial will follow at Oglethorpe Memorial Park with full military honors. Pallbearers will be Wayne Stewart, Tanner Knoblich, Mark Breningstall, Bobby Brady, Donald Downs, and Spears Flanders.
