Adelaide Stafford Swindell

Athens Rose Adelaide Stafford Swindell, 100, of Athens, GA, died March 26, 2014 at her home. Born on November 13, 1913, in Liberty County, in Flemington (Hinesville), GA, Mrs. Swindell was the daughter of the late William Isham Stafford and Addie Daniel Stafford of Hinesville. After graduating High School from Bradwell Institute in Hinesville, she attended Andrew College in Cuthbert, GA. She received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education and Reading Specialist Certificate from the University of Georgia in Athens. Her teaching career spanned 27 years including Athens, Lawrenceville and Hinesville. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens, the Jewel Sunday School Class, the State Retired Teachers Association and the Athens Area Retired Educators Association. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Bernard Swindell; brother W.I. Stafford, Jr.; sister Josephine Pollock; sons James F. Swindell and Bernard Swindell, Jr.; grandsons Timothy Shane Swindell, Bernard "Buzzy" Swindell, III, and David Kipley "Kip" Swindell; and daughter-in-law, Mary Swindell. Mrs. Swindell is survived by her sons, Paul Swindell (Mary) of Valdosta, GA, Tom Swindell (Loralee) of Athens, GA, and Dan Swindell (Beth) of Kettering, OH; nephew Arthur Pollock (Joy) of Savannah, GA; grandchildren Paula Sheffield (Larry) of Valdosta, GA, Cindi Bates (Dick) of Montclair, VA, Megan Shirley (Rhett) of Greenville , SC, Dana Swindell of Portland, OR, Vicki Capper and Susan Rhodes; great grandchildren, Jefferson Bates (Samantha) of Stafford, VA, Jordan Bates, April Weeks (Chris) of Newberry, FL, Claire, Ford and Gus Shirley of Greenville, SC. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. from the chapel of Lord and Stephens, EAST with the Dr. Frank Granger officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 6:00- 8:00 P.M. and one hour prior to the service. Graveside service will be Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 4:00 P.M. in the Flemington Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hinesville, GA, with Rev. David Wainright officiating. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Athens First Baptist Church Children's Fund, 355 Pulaski Street, Athens, GA 30601-2860.
