Herbert Myers Gaskin (Mr. Curly), age 88, entered into heavenly rest Tuesday, May 6, 2014, after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Walthourville in Liberty County. Mr. Gaskin, a World War II veteran, entered service April 20, 1944. He was a Paratrooper of Company E, 513th Airborne Division, Infantry Regiment. He participated in the Central Europe Campaign during WWII. Decorations: WWII Victory Medal, American Service Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal with one Bronze Star, and a Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Gaskin was employed at "Camp Stewart" in 1949 and retired after twenty years of Federal Service. During his service at Camp Stewart (now Fort Stewart), he was General Yardmaster of Transportation. The "Cuban Crisis" was a major event during this time of service. Mr. Gaskin was well known to many as "Mr. Curly". He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, gospel music, and "just working"! He would say, "We work hard and we play hard." He was a diligent worker with the determination and strength to get the job done. He was a peacemaker and a caring person. Every July 4th was a special event with BBQ, food, and fireworks, for his friends and associates. Mr. Gaskin was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie T. Gaskin and Maggie Way Gaskin; brothers, Carl Oswald Gaskin, Bruce Gaskin, and Herbert T. Gaskin; and sister, Betty Jean Bently Byrd. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Pearson Gaskin; daughter, Gail Crabtree (Terry); son, Byrum Gaskin (Billie Anne); stepson, Phillip White (Lisa); stepdaughter, Julie Wells (Daniel); brother, Charles Gaskin; grandchildren, Jeffery Flagg, Brittany Flagg, Taylor Gaskin, and Kayla Gaskin; step grandchildren, Will White, Ross White, and Ethan Wells; eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2014, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Carter Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Elim Baptist Church Cemetery. Elder Reginald Anderson and Pastors Aaron Cowart and Greg Bentley will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Terry Crabtree, Johnny Gaskin, Jeff Gaskin, Darryl Gaskin, Ray Middleton, and Jeff Mobley. Memorials may be made to J.C.
