Master Sargent (Retired) Garlon D. Penland, 74, died Friday, October 03, 2014 at Liberty Regional Medical Center after a long illness. He was a native of Knoxville, Tennessee and has lived in Hinesville for the past fifteen years. He served twenty-two years of service in the United States Army most of which he served in the Special Forces. He served three tours in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart. Garlon was instrumental in getting the VA Clinic located in Hinesville. He later retired from Lockheed Martin Corporation. He was a member and former commander of DAV Chapter 46, VFW Vietnam Vets, and the National Order of Eternal Trenchs. He is survived by his wife, Myoko Penland of Hinesville; a son, David Penland of Sweden; three grandchildren; and one brother, Vernon Penland of Chicago. A visitation will be held Monday, October 6, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. with a service at 12:00 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. A Committal Ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, Ocotober 7, 2014 at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery with full military honors.
