Barbara Milligan

October 30, 1939 — December 29, 2014

Richmond Hill Barbara Odom Milligan of Richmond Hill, Georgia joined her Heavenly Father on December 29, 2014 after a long illness of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Barbara was born Hilda Barbara Odom to Uly and Armine Limerick Odom in Albany, Georgia on October 30, 1939. She moved to Savannah, Georgia with her parents and three brothers in 1952. Barbara attended Washington Avenue Junior High School and the Savannah High School on Washington Avenue. After graduation in 1957, she went to Young Harris Methodist Junior College where she graduated in 1959 with an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts. Barbara returned home to marry her high school sweetheart, Butch, on August 19, 1959. She began teaching at the age of nineteen while continuing her education at Georgia Southern and Armstrong State Colleges. Barbara received her Bachelor's Degree from Armstrong, a Master's Degree from Savannah Graduate Center, and an Education Specialist Degree from Georgia Southern. Barbara enjoyed being an educator for Savannah-Chatham County for thirty-six years, St. Paul's Lutheran Day School and Savannah Country Day School for two and a half years. For five years, she worked part-time supervising student teachers for the state of Georgia and Armstrong Atlantic State University. After retirement in 2002, she began active participation in bible studies. Learning about God was the most important thing she did in her life. Barbara joined the bible studies at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church where she found loving, Godly people who loved the Lord! She had found her spiritual home. Barbara loved people! She was a member of several organizations through the years including Nu Phi Mu, Susan B's (Sigma Beta Sigma), Beta Sigma Phi, Alpha Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa, National Education Association, Georgia Education Association PAGE, National Reading Association, and Reading Recovery Council of North American. During her active participation, she was an officer in most the groups. She is survived by her loving husband, Gordon Lamar Milligan, Jr. (Butch); a son, Michael Lamar Milligan (Mitzi); a daughter, Michelle Milligan Hearn (Ronnie); daughter, Melissa Lynne Milligan; eight grandchildren, Kelli Burnsed George (Scott), Vandi Burnsed Ryan (Matt), Kristen Burnsed Bottom (Daniel), Beka Burnsed, Molly Burnsed, Sean Milligan, and Erin Milligan; eight great grandchildren, Bayley George, Tori George, Lyndsey George, McKenzie Storey, Bryson Bottom, Leyton Bottom, Isabella Bottom, and Madison Ryan; a brother, Steve Odom (Barbara) and sister-in-laws, Patti Odom and Brenda Odom. She is preceded in death by her father, Uly Odom, II; mother, Armine Odom and brothers, Uly Odom, III (Butch) and Ronald Odom. Barbara's special baby, Missy, will be buried with her. Missy showed Barbara that special love that only a dog can show. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel in Richmond Hill, Funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2015 at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church on Hwy 144 in Richmond Hill. Burial will be at Burnt Church Cemetery located near the church immediately following the service. There will be a celebration of Barbara's joy of being in the presence of the Lord following the burial at the church's Parish Hall. All are welcome. Barbara's family would like to thank each of you for being a part of her happiness and peace as she coped with her illness.
