SFC (US ARMY, Ret.) Charles R. Shaner, 75, died Wednesday at Savannah Hospice. A native of Salem, Pennsylvania, he lived in Hinesville for 38 years. Sergeant First Class Shaner retired from the United States Army after 23 years of service, worked for City of Hinesville Public Works Department for 15 years and was a member of American Legion Post 168. He was predeceased by Brigitte Shaner, his wife of 22 years; and his companion of 31 years, Ella Cato. He is survived by his four sons, Michael Shaner (Donna) of Savannah, Charles Patrick Shaner (Jodi) of Eugene, Oregon, LTC Jeffrey A. Shaner, US ARMY, of Kansas City, KS, and Scott T. Shaner of Savannah; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. One of ten children, he is also survived by two brothers, Berton Shaner of Seaford, DE, and Robert Shaner of Clayton, DE, and two sisters, Donna Van Wormer of Franklin, PA, and Norma Stratman of Greensboro, MD. Visitation will be from 11am until 1p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral Service will follow at 1p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Dea. Chad Chaffee officiating. Full Military Honors will be presented by the United States Army Honor Guard. A private family burial will be in Oglethorpe Memorial Park at a later date.
