Hinesville Dorothy "Dot" Long Mitchell, 79, died peacefully on Thursday, January 8, 2015, at St. Joseph's Hospital after a short illness. Born in Long County, Georgia, to the late Willard and Authalia Long, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Mitchell, a sister, Mary Ellen Long McCallister, and a nephew, Jed Lewis. Dot retired from Civil Service at Fort Stewart in 1988. She was the co-owner of Mitchell's Christmas Tree and Rabbit Farm for many years. She was active in Girl Scouts and a children's ministries group leader for several years. She continued as an active member in Young at Heart (at Live Oak Church of God), Red Hats, and many bingo groups. At the time of her death, she was the longest-serving member of Live Oak Church of God. Dot also attended Jesup Church of God. Survivors include her daughters, Donette (Pete) Leachman of Hinesville and Debbie (Kenny) West of Ludowici; grandsons, LT Paul Mitchell Leachman (GA Army National Guard) of Atlanta and LT Justin Leachman (USAF) of Kadena AFB, Japan; sisters, Betty (Geane) Brown of Williamson, GA, Etna Doyle of Hinesville, Maxine Fallin of Hinesville, and Jennie (M.F.) Futch of Shellman's Bluff; sister-in-law, Joyce McCallister of Ridgeland, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Monday, January 12, 2015, from 6-8 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral Services will begin at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at Live Oak Church of God with Rev. Aaron Cowart and Rev. Clayton Dowd officiating. Burial will follow in the Hinesville Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be Michael McCallister, Keith Doyle, Mike Lyle, David Fallin, Ray Hamilton, and Byrum Gaskin. Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of Live Oak Church of God Young at Heart. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Live Oak Church of God, Joseph House Food Pantry, 296 Live Oak Church Road, Hinesville, GA 31313.
