Richard C. (Rick) Poppell, Sr., aged 66, beloved husband of Evelyn, father to Amy, Richard, Jr., and Allison, grandfather to Elizabeth, Banyan, and Rowan, passed away on January 12, 2015, at his home in Port Haywood, Virginia, after a 12 year journey with prostate cancer. Additionally he is survived by his great aunts: Rose Wells and Willene Rozier; cousins: Nicky and Billy Wells and their families, well as numerous other extended family members in the area. Rick was born in Albany, Georgia, on December 3rd, 1948, to Grant and Thelma Wells Poppell. He graduated from Bradwell Institute. His love of travel and adventure was cultivated early in his life, as the family accompanied his father who served in the United States Air Force. As a boy, he lived in Sculthorpe, England, Clovis, New Mexico, and Anchorage, Alaska. As an adult, his work adventures took him to Vicenza, Italy, Heidelberg, Germany, and Kuwait. Rick's work life was spent in service to soldiers on the front lines as a Supply Systems Analyst through the Department of the Army Logistics, and later at CALIBRE Systems. Rick's recent years were spent in Mathews County, Virginia, pursuing his passion for fishing, boating, and loving his grandchildren. Rick brought humor, liveliness, a positive attitude, and laughter to all who loved him. He was a tenderhearted, kind, and honorable man of strong Christian faith. He had an amazing appreciation for the joy that can be found in living. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the Hinesville Cemetery. Reverend Gabe Gill of Gum Branch Baptist Church will officiate. Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
