Winferd S. “Winnie” Dowd, 88, died Sunday, February 28, 2016, at Coastal Manor Nursing Home in Ludowici.

Born in Wrightsville, GA, she lived in Hinesville for 45 years and was a Baptist.  She and her late husband, Joe Dowd, owned the Win-a-Chick in Hinesville for 14 years.  She was a booster of the Bradwell Institute Girls Basketball team and was honored as “Fan of the Year” on two occasions. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe W. Dowd; brother, Dean Smith; and sister, Myra Purnell.

She is survived by four sons, Lamar Dowd of Hinesville, Larry Perry of Richmond Hill, Daniel Dowd of Virginia, and Joe L. Dowd of Arizona; two daughters, Marcy Calhoun of Ocala, FL, and Karen Bean of Iowa; three sisters, Ione Newman and Jeanette Frost of Meldrim, and Libby Durden of Savannah; one brother, Eugene Smith of Meldrim; 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel.  The funeral service will be Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at 11 am at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel with Rev. Henry Dowd and Rev. Clayton Dowd officiating.  Burial will be in Oglethorpe Memorial Park. 

Pallbearers will be Phillip Dowd, Tyler Dowd, Brandon Calhoun, Matthew Dowd, Chris Gibson, and Eric Boatwright.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Blake Gibson, Daniel Dowd, Jr., and Brian Cobb.
