Theodore "Ted" Thaddeus Turek

August 7, 1935 — March 11, 2016


Theodore “Ted” Thaddeus Turek, 80, passed away at 11:21 am, March 11, 2016, after his short battle with colon cancer, at the Hospice Savannah Hospice House.

He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Valerie Turek of Allenhurst; four daughters, Pattie Halford (David) and Carrie Hutchens (Mark) of Plymouth, IN, Pamela Schreiber of Portage, IN, and Janice Spiller (Steve Newsome) of Hobart, IN; step-daughter, LaMiracle Rogers of Atlanta, GA; ten grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one step-granddaughter, Ava; two sisters, Evelyn Meiu of Pueblo, CO, and Charlotte Bugay of Elk Grove Village, IL; brother- and sister-in-law, Wilbert and Veronica McCullough of Hinesville, GA; father- and mother-in-law, Nathaniel and Josie Carter of Ludowici, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary Turek of New Chicago, IN; his first wife and his children’s mother, Mary (nee Eyrich) Turek; daughter, Robin Turek; two sisters, Louise E. Picka and Betty Jean Lazorik; brother, Edward Karpinski and his wife Mary Karpinski; two brothers-in-law, Richard Meiu and Richard Lazorik; son-in-law, Donald Schreiber; nieces, Linda Meiu and Cindy Meiu; and his best friend, Daniel. 

Theodore served in the US ARMY in artillery and was honorably discharged.  He was employed with Gary Works and United States Steel Corporation in Gary, IN, until his retirement. 

As his health began to decline, Ted traveled with his daughter and her family as a military dependent.  He lived in Rolla, MO, and Pueblo, CO, where he enjoyed fishing and gardening and was presented with several awards for growing beautiful plants and flowers in his apartment complex.  He moved to Hinesville 15 years ago, and began working at Wal-Mart, where he nurtured the plants, flowers, and trees in the garden area.  Later, he was transferred to McDonald’s Inc. by Wal-Mart.  Realizing his passion was for the outdoors, he began landscaping and repairing lawnmowers.  Ted lived a very quiet lifestyle.  When he wasn’t outdoors, he enjoyed watching television and participating in politics.  He was Catholic.

Visitation will be 10 am – 11:00 am, Thursday, March 17, 2016, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel.  The funeral service will follow in the chapel at 11:00 with Rev. Wilbert McCullough officiating.  Burial with Military Honors will be at 1:00 p.m. in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Glennville, GA. 

Pallbearers will be David Halford, Mark Hutchens, Ryan Schreiber, Jesse Holland, Quansa McCullough, and Quixote McCullough.
