Captain Denis Ray Murphy [67] passed away after a long battle with cancer on April 22nd, 2016 in Charleston, South Carolina peacefully at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born December 30th, 1948 in Jacksonville, Florida to Raymond and Mary Murphy of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, where he was ultimately raised.
Denis was an Army Veteran and served in the Vietnam War. Upon returning from his tour, he embarked on a number of career paths including commercial fishing. Later he became an unlimited general contractor, owning several of his own contracting businesses. During that time, he built many additions on VA hospitals across the country and authored the national protocol for synthetic stucco inspections. After retirement from the construction business, he went back to his to his first love, shrimping. He started shrimping in South Carolina and later moved on to Sunbury, Georgia to be closer to the shrimp. He was an active member of the South Carolina Shrimper’s Association, and later served on the board of the Georgia Shrimper’s Association.
Denis had a contagious passion for fishing and shrimping. He was always quick to share his opinions and we will deeply miss his quick wit, memorable one-liners, and love of life. Denis was one of a kind.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine [Dimmery] and daughter Emily.
