Walter Alwin Anderson, 73, passed away on June 24, 2016, at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia, of rapid onset lung disease.
He was the husband of Signe K. Anderson. They shared 39 years of marriage.
Walter was born in Homerville, Georgia, on November 26, 1942, to the late Thomas Alwin and Bessie Mae (Jean) Ammons Anderson.
Walt grew up in Glennville, Georgia, and loved playing football in high school. Football would be a sport that remained dear to his heart. After graduation in 1960, Walt joined the US Air Force and served as an MP for 8 years in the Mississippi Air Guard and 2 years in security and law enforcement before returning to Georgia to complete his BBA in Business Administration from Armstrong State College in 1974 and join the Georgia Army National Guard. He later retired a CW4 with a total of 35 years of military service. He also worked as the Liberty County Administrator and Tax Assessor, was a real estate appraiser and broker,
Walt loved the Lord, was dedicated to family and friends and self-sacrificing to provide for all. He loved fishing and shooting with his grandchildren, as well as watching their sporting events. He also had a passion for gardening, sharing his plants, tinkering, US and Military History, and was an avid reader.
He is survived by Signe and his 5 children, Billy Anderson of Walthourville, Bobby Anderson (Rhonda) of Hinesville, Amber Oliver (Jason) of Peachtree City, Wendy Houser of Glennville, and Hollis Hill (Sean) of Ellabell; a sister, Tommie Jean Ricketson (James) of Hazelhurst; an uncle, Bruce Williams of Valdosta; thirteen grandchildren, one goddaughter, and many cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom he treasured.
Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral Services will begin at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel with Rev. Mike Howard officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville at 3 pm.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Mike Ricketson, Jeff Ricketson, Chuck Cooper, Glenn Jordan, John Womble and members and retirees of the National Guard Training Site DET2 of HQ STARC and 75th Eng. Det. Dept. of Fort Stewart, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to cancer, diabetes, or veterans funds, or to a church or charity of your choice.
