Gum Branch
Guy H. Wells, 78, passed away peacefully at home Monday, September 26, 2016, surrounded by his family.
He was a Christian of the Baptist and Catholic faiths from Gum Branch, Georgia. A veteran of the United States Army, he was retired from the Fort Stewart Fire Department after 26 years of service. An active member of the community, he served on several county
Mr. Wells started the Gum Branch Volunteer Fire Department and became the first Fire Chief in 1981. He secured the land and financing to start the first Catholic Church in Hinesville, St. Stephen First Martyr Catholic Church, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree.
He was an avid farmer, hunter, fisherman and volunteer recreation coach for many years. He loved to watch the Braves, Falcons, and Georgia Bulldogs.
He was predeceased by his parents, Edgar S. and Thelma B. Wells and his sisters and brother, Doretha, Mondell and Scott.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carolyn Wells; children, Gail Wells Carroll (Dan) of Surfside Beach, SC, Michael Guy Wells (Moira) of Gum Branch, and Dody Wells Odell (Jeff) of Portland, OR; sister, Melba Wells Smiley of Evans, GA; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be 10-11:30 am, Friday, September 30, 2016, at Liberty Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 11:30 am and burial will be in the Edgar Wells Family Cemetery.
