Retired Master Sergeant William "Bill" Edward Doughtie, Jr., 75, passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, GA, after a brief illness.
He was born at his family's residence in Powell’s Point located in lower Currituck County, NC. Bill (Jibbie, as he was known growing up) was one of seven siblings born to the late William and Lucille (Wright) Doughtie, Sr. His earlier days were filled with fishing and duck hunting along the coastal area of North Carolina.
Bill left Currituck County in 1960 to join the US Army. He was an Armor Crewman and Calvary Scout during his military career. His combat tours in Vietnam were with the 1st Cavalry Division - "First Team" (1965-1966) and the 23rd Infantry - "Americal" Division (1970-1971). During his service to our country, he served tours of duty in Germany (3); Vietnam (2); Korea; Fort Jackson, SC; Fort Knox, KY; Fort Benning, GA; Fort Carson, CO; and Fort Stewart, GA. He was the recipient of the following awards: Purple Heart, Air Medal (15), Overseas Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Medal with Palm, Army Commendation Medal with V Device, Presidential Unit Citation, and Aircraft Crewman Badge. Following his retirement from the US Army in 1983, Bill worked on Fort Stewart at the Signal Corps Career Center and the Multi-Purpose Range Complex for many years.
Bill is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 49 years, Jane Louise (Warren) Doughtie, formerly of Louisville, KY; siblings: Lucille "Billie" Martin; Ralph Doughtie (surviving wife Dorothy); & Clarence Earl Doughtie.
He is survived by their children, Christopher "Chris" & Susan Doughtie, Sr. (and their son, Christopher II) of Evans, GA, Mark & Phillis Doughtie (and their daughters, Erin and Jessica) of Hinesville, GA, Diane Vasquez (and her daughter, Brittany, and Brittany’s daughter, Eden) & John Kirk of Fort Lauderdale, FL; siblings, Susie & Charles Palmer of Stallings, NC, Mary Edna & Allen Linton of Madison Heights, VA, and Dan E. Doughtie, of Madison Heights; as well as several nieces & nephews.
The family would like to extend appreciation to Reverend Deacon Chad Chaffee (SGM, US Army, ret.) for his assistance in this process as well as the Vietnam Veterans of America (Liberty Post 789, Hinesville, GA) and US Army Honor Guard from Fort Stewart, GA, for their participation in his service.
Funeral Services will begin at 1p.m., Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. The family will receive visitors for one hour prior to the service. Burial with Full Military Honors will be in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, GA at 3 p.m.
