John E. “Jack” Lanier, Jr., 89, passed away at home Thursday, August 31, 2017, surrounded by his family.
Born in Savannah and raised on Tybee Island, he went into the U.S. Navy in 1945 and later retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He was a member of St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church and he loved to shrimp.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Carlton Lanier, and a sister, Mary Durden.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Melba Lanier; a daughter, Sheryl L. Lanier of Atlanta, and a son, James Kevin Lanier of Hinesville; 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel, with Final Roll Call by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 789 at 5:45 p.m. A private family service with Full Military Honors will be at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville. Rev. Deacon “Chad” Chaffee will officiate.
