Talmadge “Smitty” Hughes, Jr., 79, passed away Friday, April 28, 2017, after a long illness. A native of Long County, GA, and member of Ludowici First Baptist Church, he was a resident of Richmond Hill for the past 47 years. He retired in 1994 after a 30 plus year career with the State of Georgia, which began with the Department of Transportation and from there he went to the Department of Natural Resources as a conservation officer. A founding member of Kleanbore Hunting Club. He loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed the water and the outdoors with his wife, Mildred, at his side. He also enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren who he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his father, Talmadge Hughes, Sr., and mother, Carlisle Moxley. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mildred S. Hughes; children, Gary Futch (Machiell), Earl Futch (Charlotte), and Diane Dudley (Richard), all of Richmond Hill; sister, Caro Nau of Wisconsin; 7 grandchildren, Joshua Futch, Jeremy Futch (Abigail), Jonathan Dudley, Jessica Dudley, Jennifer Dudley, Mathew Futch and Samantha Ruess (Tyler); 2 great-grandchildren, Paisley Ruess and Benjamin Futch; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Monday, May 1, 2017, at Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel. Funeral Services will begin at 11 am, Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mat Futch, Jonathan Dudley, Joshua Futch, Jeremy Futch, Johnny Swafford, and Jerry Swafford. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike and Dorita Casey, Clyde Smith, Dr. Ben Chapman, and George and Beverly Waters. Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
