Command Sergeant Major (US Army, Retired) James P. “Jim” Harper, 72, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2016, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. Born in Alapaha, Georgia, Jim was retired from the US Army after 28 years of service, including two tours in Vietnam. After his retirement from the military, he went on to retire from Civil Service as Chief of Logistics, DPW on Fort Stewart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cozetta and Purley Harper of Alapaha; one sister, Nancy Padgett of Alapaha; two brothers, Donald and Carrol Harper; sister-in-law, Jolly Harper; and brother-in-law, Lamar Davis. Jim is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sheryl Paulk Harper of Hinesville; one daughter, Kimberlie Mobley (Wayne) of Hinesville; twin grandchildren, Emma Claire and John Blake Mobley of Hinesville; one sister, Rebecca Davis of Alapaha; one brother, George Harper (Sandy) of Alapaha; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 25, 2016, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Visitation will be held prior to the service, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Burial with Full Military Honors will be in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville. Honorary pallbearers will be W.L. Hall, Gerald DeLoach, Bo Boram, Bob Adams, Jim Reid, Randy Mobley, David Griffis, Van Tucker, Hayne Norton, and Cecil Kicklighter.
