Midway LT. Jonathan Nathaniel Cann ended his valiant fight with cancer on Saturday, November 29, 2014. Jonathan Cann, known by friends and family as Jon, was born on May 5th, 1970 in Eastpoint, GA to his parents Dr. James and Dr. Janice Cann. Jon was a bright and compassionate child that was never afraid to share the Gospel with friends and strangers alike. Throughout his late childhood and teen years Jon called the city of Savannah his home. He graduated from Robert W. Groves High School in 1988 with honors and began attending Armstrong State College. College is where he met his wife of 24 years, Alayna, they were married on November 22nd, 1990. Jon attended Armstrong from 1988 - 1990 when he joined the United States Marine Corps. Jon served for 2 years and was a veteran of Operation Desert Storm where he earned a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in action. After leaving the Marine Corps Jon transitioned to the Department of Justice where he served the Federal Bureau of Prisons. His career spanned 21 years with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, his last 7 years were as a Lieutenant. Jon recently returned to Midway, GA. to be close with friends and family during his latter days. Previously he was a resident of Bennettsville, SC. where he retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons in October of 2014. He is a member of Lighthouse Tabernacle of Praise church. Jon is survived by his wife, Alayna; sons, CPL. Donavan Cann USMC, Alexander Cann, and Christian Cann; parents, Dr. James & Dr. Janice Cann; brother, David Cann; sister and brother-in-law, Joanna & Thomas Hagan; as well as nieces, and nephews. There will be a viewing at Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel, GA. on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will also be held at Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. There will also be a graveside service with Military Honors on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at the Georgia Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, GA.
