Hinesville Freeman Leverette Smith, 78, died Saturday, October 25, 2014, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center after a short illness. He was born in Liberty County on December 31, 1935, to Freeman Langston and Thelma Smith. A graduate of Bradwell Institute class of 1952, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Hinesville, a veteran of the United States Air Force and the Georgia National Guard, and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry A. Smith. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Sue Smith; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Connie Smith of Hinesville and Darrell and Lori Smith of Tybee Island; brother, Joseph Dale Smith (Mary) of Allenhurst; grandchildren, Jessica Zoucks (Patrick) of Riceboro and Kyle Smith of Hinesville; one great-grandchild, Averie Zoucks; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral Services will be 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Hinesville, where Mr. Smith will lie in state from 11:00-11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors.
