Midway MSgt LeRoy I. Helbing (US Army,Ret.), 74, died Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah after a short illness. Born in Dubuque, Iowa, he was a resident of Liberty County for 40 years. He served 23 years in the United States Army, including two tours of duty in Vietnam, and earned the Bronze Star. After retiring from the military, he worked for Liberty County for 32 years until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Margaret Helbing; one son, Greg Helbing; and one brother, Eugene Helbing. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Juanita Helbing; two sons, Gerald and Michael Helbing of Texas; beloved stepchildren, Robert Lerma of New Mexico, Steven Lerma of California, Vita Sotelo of Texas, and Louis Maspero of California; two sisters, Ella Mae Holt and Marlene Oyen of Wisconsin; one brother, Richard Helbing of Iowa; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
