Midway John Gilbert Bottoms, 64, died Tuesday at Candler St. Joseph’s hospital after a short illness. A native of Springfield, IL, he lived in Midway for 36 years. Mr. Bottoms was a Vietnam veteran, having served in the US Army, and was medically retired from civil service with the Georgia National Guard. He was Baptist by faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tommie Barnett Bottoms; brothers, Donald Bottoms and Danny Bottoms. He is survived by his daughter, Amanda B. Propes (Charles) of Midway; two sons, Thomas Bottoms (Wendy) of Sanford, NC, and Matthew Bottoms (Tabitha) of Guyton; mother, Leatta Lee Bottoms of Reidsville; brothers, Terry Bottoms and Earl Bottoms; sisters, Shareena McKinney, Shirley Sutherland, Leanna Bounsana, Julie Arnold, and Janet Cook; and nine grandchildren. Visitation will be from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. The Funeral Service will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel with Reverend Josh May officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Thomas Propes, Jeff Hines, Steve Cutler, Wayne Browning, Lloyd James and Austin Black.
