Savannah Rev. Lucious Lawton Smith, 84, died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital after a short illness. A native of Bryan County, he served in the US Navy before founding the Holy Church of God in 1955 which later became Richmond Hill Full Gospel Church. Rev. Smith served as a minister for 58 years and retired from the University of GA system. He organized the Belfast Hunt Club in 1979 where he was the president for several years. In 1986 believing “Educating Children with a Bible Foundation for a Better Leadership Tomorrow”, he founded The Richmond Hill Christian Academy. He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Lillian G. Smith and a son, Stephen Travis Smith. Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Cason of Savannah; three sons, Duane Smith of Nevils, Gary (Barbara) Smith of Riceboro, and Terry (Joni) Smith of Rincon; daughter in laws, Evelyn Smith of Savannah and Janet Smith of Ellabell; a sister, Blondean (Oscar) Newman of Ellabell; a brother in law, Wayne (Nancy) Gunter of Richmond Hill; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a lifelong friend who he considered a son, Brooks (Janice) Bashlor. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday, Monday 20, 2013 at Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel. The body will be lying in state from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Richmond Hill Full Gospel Church with Rev. Mark Downs, Rev. Jepth Newberry, and Rev. Tom Newberry officiating. Burial will follow at Lower Black Creek Cemetery in Ellabell. Online condolences can be made at www.carterbryanchapel.com.
