Walter Watson Meeks, Jr., 82, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at his residence after an extended illness. The son of the late Walter Watson Meeks, Sr., and Susan Elizabeth (Bess) Williams Meeks, he was born December 25, 1930 in Atlanta. He was reared in Long County, Georgia. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Frances Lane Meeks, originally of Rebecca, Georgia; two sons, Walter Watson (Buck) Meeks, III, and John Harold Meeks, Sr. (Jo Ann) all of Richmond Hill; four grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Meeks, John Harold (Beau) Meeks, Jr., Evan Lane Meeks all of Richmond Hill and Lewis Williams Meeks of Helena, Montana; and a cousin, Mary Williams Worth of Richmond Hill. Also survivors include brother-in-law, Doctor William Kelvin Lane (Rachel) and sister-in-laws, Dorothy Joe Lane Bean, Emma Janis Lane Hess (Peter), Linda Lane Eskola, and Gerri Sterns Lane; and a number of nephews, nieces, cousins, and other relatives. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law Julia Anne Lane Stewart; brothers-in-law, Elbert Lee Bean, Richard Eugene Lane, and Joseph Matthew Lane. Walter Meeks was a graduate of Long County High School and the University of Georgia. He was an Eagle Scout and always supported scouting programs. He was a veteran of the US Army (Korean Conflict), a Master Mason, and a member of Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church. He served on the Coastal Electric Membership Board of Directors for 28 years representing Bryan County. Mr. Meeks worked in the Tech-Rep Division of Philco-Ford in Texas and Alaska. He then became the Satellite Tracking Station Commander for the US Army Map Service. Later he was an electronics technician at Fort Steward and Hunter AAF. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a master of shooting sports. Visitation will be at Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Internment will follow at Burnt Church Presbyterian Cemetery, Hwy 144 East, Richmond Hill.
