Franklin David Wood (1SG, US Army, ret.)

1SG Franklin D. Wood (US Army, retired), 83, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2019, at Candler Hospital after a long battle with lung cancer and heart disease. 

A resident of Hinesville for the past 48 years, 1SG Wood retired from the United States Army in March 1981 after 26 years of service and, in 1997, retired from Civil Service.  He was a Vietnam Veteran and the recipient of many military awards including a special award from the German Government after saving a 10-year-old boy from drowning.  He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America and an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and one sister.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Dorothy Wood of Allenhurst; daughter, Juanita Griffin of Glennville; two grandsons, David Griffin (Crystal) of Reidsville and Jimmy Griffin (Kayla) of Tennessee; granddaughter, Becky Poole (Victor) of Swainsboro; great-granddaughters, Paisleigh Griffin and Macy Kersey of Reidsville; three sisters and two brothers, all of North Carolina; several nieces and nephews; and Daniel Girard of Vermont, who was like a son to Franklin. 

Funeral services will begin at 2pm, Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service.  Burial with Full Military Honors will follow in Hinesville Cemetery.
