Ludowici Master Sergeant Martha Stevens-Young, 59, was granted her angel wings Monday, September 3, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was an enrolled member of the Easter Band of Cherokee Indians and lived in Ludowici for 6 years. Master Sergeant Stevens-Young joined the US Army in December 1980 and was able to serve her country while traveling around the world. She began working at Winn Army Community Hospital in 2008 and worked as a contact representative with the WTB, Patient Affair’s as the Chief and as a Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer. She was a decorated soldier and had received numerous medals to include Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal and many more. She was also recognized by the Department of Defense in 2008 for the Society of American Indian Government Employees award. She retired from the US Army after 27 years of dedicated service. Survivors include her daughters Ursula Stevens-Garcia of Lawrence, KS and Devola Stevens of Ludowici; sister Sharon McCoy of Cherokee, NC; Grandchildren Chaise Williams, Zackariah Stevens, Sidney and Samuel Garcia. Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m.Friday, September 7, 2012 at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel with Full Military Honors. Rev. Terry Kenny will be officiating.
