Emily J. Pickels

Emily Jean Pickels was taken from us on early Saturday morning, September 1, 2012. She was a very visible part of the Savannah historical and tour guide industry from an early age and into her adulthood as a horse carriage tour guide and museum docent for the Owens Thomas house and Davenport house. Emily would meet and greet people from all over the world to perform as well as discuss the rich history and culture of Savannah. She was a born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and moved to Richmond Hill, Georgia, in 2001. She attended grade school in Benton, AR, middle school and junior high school in Richmond Hill, and then graduated high school in 2009 from St Vincent’s Academy in Savannah. Emily is survived by her mother Janet M., her adopted father Jeffrey C, and her younger sister Erin M. Pickels, all of Richmond Hill, Ga. She is preceded in death by her father Charles Miller, who passed away when she was 4 years old in Arkansas, her paternal grandfather, O.C. Miller, and maternal grandmother, Jeanne Glover. Emily left Arkansas with her family when Gulfstream Aerospace employed her father and the Pickels’ found their home in Coastal Georgia. She also leaves behind her grandmother Carolyn Miller of Sherwood, AR, her grandfather Carl M. Glover Sr., of Benton, AR, and grandparent’s Gerald C. and Mary E. Pickels, of Cabot, AR. There are also many aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends and colleagues who played a very important role in Emily’s life. Services for Emily are set for this Friday and Saturday in both Richmond Hill and Savannah. On Friday, September 7, at 7pm; there will be a Rosary at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Richmond Hill and the following day Saturday, September 8, at 10am; there will be a Mass Service at St. Anne's with a visitation after mass to visit with the family organized by the St Anne’s women’s church council. St. Anne's is located next door to the Carter Funeral Home, which is taking care of Emily. There is no burial planned at this time but there will be two more ceremonies in Savannah for Emily organized by her friends and colleagues from the St Vincent’s Academy class of 2009 and Davenport House Museum. In lieu of flowers, Emily’s family wishes are to show your support as a contributor in her memory to the Davenport House Museum, 324 E. State Street, Savannah, GA 31401.
