Darrell Payne

July 22, 1930 — March 24, 2012

Ludowici Darrell G. Payne CW 4 (retired), 81, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2012 at St. Joseph Hospital. He was born in North Carolina, joined the Army at fifteen and retired after twenty-nine years of dedicated service. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the military he lived in the Ludowici/Hinesville area for forty-five years, he was an instructor at Savannah Tech in Savannah and retired after nineteen years. He attended First United Methodist Church in Hinesville and was a member of the A.G. Overman Sunday School Class. In addition, he was a member of the Hinesville Masonic Lodge 271 F & AM and Alee Shrine Temple in Savannah. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Mary Payne; two daughters, Beth Vandervort of Ludowici and Michele (John) Walls of Millen; one son Darrell G. Payne, Jr. of Travelor’s Rest, SC; four grandchildren Amanda Chapman, Ashley Shaw, Brittany Shaw and Elizabeth Vandervort; and two great-grandchildren Kinslee Chapman and Michael Pond. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Hinesville. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery in Fleming with full military honors. Honorary Pallbearers will be A.G. Overman Sunday School Class. Remembrances can be sent to Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion 225 Candler Drive, Savannah, Georgia 31405. Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel in charge of arrangements.
